Private Health Insurance Changes to Clinical Pilates

No longer able to claim rebates for pilates

From the 1st April 2019, private health insurance rebates will no longer be available for Pilates or Clinical Pilates.

However physiotherapists are the only practitioners eligible to deliver pilates-informed exercises and continue to claim this treatment through private health insurance.

So what does the change mean?

Here at Fountain Gate Physiotherapy we will no longer advertise pilates groups.  We will now be offering group rehabilitation.

These groups will continue to be limited to 4 people and are suitable for rehabilitation from injury or pain.  Each group is supervised and led by a physiotherapist who is trained in the use of exercise for rehabilitation.

We will continue to set individual programs to meet your goals and reassess your progress during each group and every 6 weeks.

Your program will consist of a mixture of clinically appropriate exercises.  The program may include some pilates reformer or pilates informed exercises but will not be solely pilates based.

What if I just want to do pilates?

If you are only wanting to do Pilates exercise for fitness and do not want to have an other clinically appropriate exercises included in your program then you are able to do this.  However this is not considered to be evidenced based physiotherapy treatment and will no longer be covered through private health insurance.

How do I join a physiotherapist led rehabilitation group?

You will first need to complete a 45 minute initial assessment.  This assessment will allow your physiotherapist to fully understand your issues and set goals to improve them.  Your physiotherapist will also perform some objective tests to provide a baseline measure.   This assessment also allows some basic exercises to be introduced prior to your first rehabilitation group.

You may then need to have 2 or 3 more 1:1 sessions with the physiotherapist prior to joining a group to ensure your program is suitable for you.

Why do I need to be reassessed?

A re-assessment allows your physiotherapist to revise your goals and change as needed.  It also provides an opportunity to review any objective measures that were taken during your initial assessment to determine progress.
