Improve the Way You Move

The PINC and STEEL programs are cancer rehabilitation programs led by a certified physiotherapist.

If you are either male or female and have been diagnosed with cancer the program will help:

  • maximise recovery;
  • regain physical and emotional strength;
  • and also to improve body confidence and control.

Both programs provide a full range of services to care, support and guide men and women through every stage of their treatment and recovery.

It is suitable after any type of cancer surgery or treatment and is for all ages, fitness levels and mobility.

Learn to live well

“Cancer patients would be shocked if they knew just how much of a benefit physical activity could have on their recovery and long term health, in some cases reducing the chances of having to go through the grueling ordeal of treatment all over again.” Prof Rod MacLeod PhD MMedEd FRCGP FAchPM, Senior Staff Specialist in Palliative Care and Conjoint Professor of the University in Sydney.

Research has shown that being active is a very important part of your recovery from cancer and the effects of its treatment.

Treatments for cancer can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and endocrine therapies.

The treatments may cause many patients to develop severe de-conditioning and fatigue.

These can then lead to significant negative impacts on quality of life.

Your PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehab Physio can help guide and support you safely back to exercise.

What does it involve?

The PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehab Physiotherapists assess each patient individually. They will assess for physical impairments and the side effects of your cancer treatment.  They will then work with you to create a program to suit your particular stage in recovery.

The sessions can include a range of services, for instance:

  • manual physiotherapy;
  • Graduated resistance training;
  • Specific pilates-informed exercises;
  • Fatigue management and exercise prescription.

Your PINC Cancer Rehab Physiotherapist will help guide and support you through each phase of your treatment and recovery.  They will also teach you what you can do to get stronger again.

Your physio will also help you understand why your body is reacting to the treatments in certain ways. Additionally, they will provide information to help you feel more in control of your body and life again.

The physiotherapists will help to educate each person on the prevention and early detection of common treatment-related impairments.  They will also provide education about exercise and health promoting behaviours.

An individualised exercise program can be prescribed for independent exercise and supervised exercises throughout the course of cancer treatment.  This program is designed for example to improve your function.  It will also help to prevent any decline related to your cancer treatment.
