Current recommendations for a better life are to complete 30 minutes of physical activity such as walking or running, 5 times per week. Plus everyone should also complete two sessions per week of strengthening.
If you have an ongoing pain or injury, are new to strengthening, or unsure what the best exercises are for you then a physiotherapy led rehabilitation session is perfect for you.
Here at Fountain Gate Physiotherapy we offer physiotherapist led group rehabilitation sessions. Your exercises during the group may include GLA:D exercises, clinical pilates or weight training. The program is dependent on your needs and your stage of recovery.
This allows you to participate in a one hour strength training session under the supervision of a physiotherapist.
Who is it suitable for?
The sessions are suitable for rehabilitation from all pains and injuries such as back pain, neck pain or osteoarthritis.
If you have noticed that you are not able to move as freely due to stiffness or you feel at risk of falls these sessions are very appropriate.
Wanting to exercise but not sure how?
Pilates-informed exercises can form a part of your program, as well as resistance band and weight training, or slider exercises.
How do I benefit?
The benefits of our group rehabilitation sessions include:
- increased strength;
- improved mobility;
- reduced pain;
- better balance;
- better mood and sleep;
- improved bone density;
- better weight management
- reduced use of medication for pain relief
Groups are limited to a maximum of 4 participants and there are multiple session times available throughout the week.
All participants have programs individualised to their specific problems and needs. The physiotherapist will alter the program when and if you are able to progress.
To get the most from a strengthening program, it is recommended that you attend two of the one hour sessions per week for a minimum of six weeks.
How do I join a group?
You are first required to have an initial assessment with the Physiotherapist prior to joining a group. This session lasts for 45 minutes and allows the physiotherapist to assess your suitability for a group and develop an exercise program.
Further one-on-one sessions last for 30 minutes and allow for correct performance of the basic exercises. Your physiotherapist may suggest further one on one sessions during the initial assessment. Otherwise you may be suitable to proceed directly to the group. You may require up to 3 or 4 one-on-one sessions prior to joining the group.
Group sessions last for 60 minutes and have up to 4 people.
Your private health insurance may provide coverage for these group sessions.
Clients who are being seen under Workcover or TAC may also be able to join a group. See this page for costs for both individual and group sessions.
What equipment is available?
A broad range of strengthening equipment and techniques are available to be incorporated into your program including:
- GLA:D
- Pilates reformers
- XR-slider
- Physio or gym ball
- Bosu ball
- Hand weights
- Treadmill and exercise bikes.
What do I bring to an assessment?
Comfortable clothes are a must, especially clothing that will not restrict your movement. Active footwear or shoes is necessary for any weightbearing exercises such as the GLA:D program.
Please bring a pair of socks if you are going to be using a pilates reformer and a towel and of course some water to stay hydrated.
